Felting a Top: Hand-Felted & Hand-Dyed Wearable Art

(Hosted by the San Diego Creative Weavers Guild)

This two-day workshop introduces felt-making as a process of transformation—moving from loose fiber to a finished, wearable form through careful layering, pressure, and time.

Day 1 focuses on structure and form. Students begin by drafting a simple pattern based on their own measurements, then learn how to lay out wool and viscose in light, intentional layers. Through wet felting, these fibers are gradually transformed into a cohesive, soft textile shaped to the body.

Day 2 explores surface and expression. Using dye and natural materials such as leaves, students experiment with organic patterning and subtle surface variation, allowing each garment to develop its own character.

By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a completed, hand-felted and hand-dyed top—designed, constructed, and finished by hand.
